Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026: The Secret of Lord Jagannath's Unique Form
When is Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 — the date, the three chariots, and the timeless verse (binu pad chalai sunai binu kana) that reveals the mystery of Lord Jagannath's limbless form.

Rath Yatra is near — this year, on Thursday, 16 July 2026, Lord Jagannath, along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, will ride out on chariots to meet his devotees himself. But have you ever wondered — how does a Lord whose hands and feet are not shown in full form do everything? The answer lies hidden in a timeless verse by Tulsidas.
बिनु पद चलइ सुनइ बिनु काना। कर बिनु करम करइ बिधि नाना॥
आनन रहित सकल रस भोगी। बिनु बानी बकता बड़ जोगी॥
binu pad chalai sunai binu kānā, kar binu karam karai bidhi nānā; ānan rahit sakal ras bhogī, binu bānī bakatā baṛ jogī
Meaning: The Lord walks without feet, hears without ears, performs countless deeds without hands, enjoys every taste without a mouth, and though without speech, is the greatest of speakers (a great yogi).
Jagannath's form and this verse
The idol of Lord Jagannath is unlike any other in the world — large, round eyes, but hands and feet that appear unfinished. At first glance it looks "incomplete," yet that is its deepest message: the Divine depends on no body, no shape, no limb.
The verse above reads almost like a description of Jagannath himself — the one who runs the entire universe without hands or feet, who hears everyone and accepts every offering. And it is this same Lord who, on Rath Yatra, "walks" out to reach every single devotee.
What is Rath Yatra?
On Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, three enormous chariots are decorated in Puri (Odisha), and millions of devotees pull them by ropes to the Gundicha Temple:
- Nandighosha — the chariot of Lord Jagannath
- Taladhwaja — the chariot of Balabhadra
- Darpadalana (Devadalana) — the chariot of Goddess Subhadra
It is believed that pulling the chariot's rope and taking part in this journey earns merit equal to many pilgrimages and sacrifices.
The greatest message
The spirit of Rath Yatra is unique — on this day the Lord comes out of the sanctum onto the open road, among everyone. Dissolving all barriers of high and low, caste and difference, he gives darshan to all equally. When the formless takes form and walks among us — that is Rath Yatra.
This Rath Yatra
Beyond the celebration, take this thought to heart too — the Divine is present in every form and every place; to feel it you need no perfect shape, only devotion. Jai Jagannath! 🙏
जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयनपथगामी भवतु मे
JagannathashtakamMeaning: "O Lord Jagannath! May you always remain in the path of my eyes (ever before my sight)." — this is every devotee's prayer on Rath Yatra.
